Wood Flooring Installation in Newcastle and the North East
Harris Flooring Services fits engineered wood, solid wood, parquet and herringbone flooring for homes and businesses across Newcastle, North Tyneside and the wider North East. The business has more than 40 years in the flooring trade, and wood is one of the materials we handle most often, from a single kitchen through to a full house renovation.
Wood flooring is less forgiving than some other floor types. Get the subfloor wrong and it shows, sometimes straight away and sometimes months later once the boards have moved. We check what is underneath before anything goes down, which is why our wood flooring jobs nearly always include an element of preparation alongside the fitting itself.

Our Wood Installation Services
Each quote is based on the property rather than a flat rate per square metre. Room sizes, the wood flooring you have chosen, and the condition of the existing floor all affect the price, so we would rather see the details than guess at a figure that does not hold up once we arrive.
Engineered Wood and Solid Wood Flooring
Engineered wood is the more common choice for us on Newcastle jobs. It copes better with the changes in temperature and humidity you get in a typical home, and it can go over underfloor heating in a way solid wood generally cannot. Solid wood still has a place, particularly where a customer wants a floor that can be sanded and refinished several times over its life.
Engineered wood
- Structure: real wood layer over a plywood base
- Suits underfloor heating: usually, subject to the manufacturer’s guidance
- Refinishing: possible, depending on the thickness of the top layer
- Movement with humidity: more stable
Solid wood
- Structure: solid timber throughout
- Suits underfloor heating: not usually recommended
- Refinishing: can be sanded and refinished multiple times
- Movement with humidity: more prone to expansion and contraction
If you are not sure which is right for your room, tell us about the property, including whether you have underfloor heating, and we will talk you through the options.
Parquet and Herringbone Flooring
Parquet and herringbone floors ask more of the installer than a straight plank floor does. The pattern has to be set out accurately before fitting starts, and a small error early on becomes obvious by the time you reach the far wall.
We fit herringbone and parquet using several materials, including:
- Engineered wood herringbone
- Solid wood parquet
- LVT herringbone
- SPC rigid-core herringbone
- Parquet click flooring
Subfloor preparation matters more here too, because an uneven surface will telegraph through a patterned floor faster than it would through a plain one. We assess the floor before we quote for the pattern work, not after.
Subfloor Preparation for Wood Flooring
- Get in touch. Call, email or use the quote form. Tell us which rooms need carpet, whether it is a home or a business, and whether you need us to supply the carpet.
- Receive your quote. We talk through your options, including underlay and carpet choice if we are supplying, and give you a free quote.
- Old flooring comes up. We remove the existing floor covering and check the subfloor underneath.
- Preparation. Any levelling, plyboard or damp proof work is completed before the carpet goes down.
- Fitting. We lay the underlay and fit the carpet, finishing neatly at edges and doorways, then check the completed floor with you.
You can read more on our floor preparation services page. Handling removal, preparation and fitting as one job means there is a single point of responsibility for the finished floor, rather than three different trades each blaming the others if something goes wrong.
